Founder Story, Part 1

Hi, Kyle here, one of the Co-Founders behind CleverConsult. I want to share the story behind why we built this.

Like many of you, I became a doctor to help people, not to complete paperwork. As a Gastroenterologist, my days were packed with patients. I treat every patient like I would a loved one and always favour thoroughness over efficiency. I’d find myself sitting in my office long after clinics ended, while my wife (also a physician) and our kids were at home waiting for me. I loved the practice of medicine, but I hated the charting that came along with it.

It didn’t take long to realize this wasn’t sustainable. I wanted to have time for my family, friends, and life outside of medicine without sacrificing the quality of care I give my patients. I wanted to magically find a way to be both thorough and efficient.

I initially hired humans (students, pharmacists, and medical students) to prepare my charts but I realized that training each one was hard, and results were mixed depending on the skill of that individual. Certainly, this was not a scalable solution for other specialists facing a similar problem.

I was intrigued by AI scribes that were coming out – but I felt they were mostly geared towards primary care workflows and not designed for specialists. Although these scribes were better than traditional dictation, they still required me, or my patients, to say every word being put into the note. I wanted a solution that could draft the majority of my note before I even entered the room.

My goal was simple: specialists deserve to be both thorough and efficient. With that conviction, and with the help of brilliant technical co-founders, we built CleverConsult, the first AI platform created entirely for specialists, not adapted for us as an afterthought.

As a specialist, I’ll always worry about my patients. That part of the job never changes. But now I no longer have to worry about the documentation that once swallowed my time. It works in the background while I focus on my patients in front of me. It’s made my clinic and endoscopy days more efficient. When I leave the hospital, I can truly shift into family mode or catch up with friends, instead of catching up on documentation.

Primary care makes up half of all physicians, which meant no one was ever going to build a tool just for us. So I did.
