Will AI cause de-skilling?

September 19, 2025

Kyle and I were at the ASGE AI in GI Conference this past weekend. We’ve got a few posts that are inspired by the sessions and conversations we had in Washington.

One of the thought-provoking discussions centered around a big question: As we introduce AI into more and more medical use cases (and really into all kinds of fields), are we actually causing “de-skilling”?

In other words, if human experts rely on AI tools to handle certain tasks, do they lose some of their own expertise over time?

It’s a fascinating and sometimes controversial idea. During a panel I spoke on, we talked about how we still need human experts to train and guide AI models through evaluations (or “evals”). But, if those experts gradually stop doing certain tasks themselves and let AI handle them, there’s a real question of how we maintain that human knowledge over the long term. It matters both for ourselves and for the coaching AI depends on from us.

At CleverConsult, we believe that AI should be a supportive partner—enhancing doctors’ capabilities rather than replacing their skills. Our goal is to ensure that doctors feel more empowered, not less, by using AI—keeping their expertise sharp and giving them more time to focus on complex, human-centered care.
